Category – April fools, I don't think so. I don't want to belabor the point, but doing the right thing is very important. Those four words, "do the right thing", are truly magical. Let me tell you a little story...
Several months ago, I went to get gas in New Jersey like I always do. I stopped at my usual gas station, filled up the tank, and left. I drove home as usual and parked the car.
A few days later, I noticed that my gas cap Was missing. I immediately called the gas station in New Jersey and talk to the owner. The owner insisted that he had nothing to do my lost gas cap.
I proceeded to explain that I would certainly not fiddle my gas cap, nor lose it or throw away. So, I said, the man at the pump must have lost it; he definitely did not screw it back on.
He asked me, what you want me to do about? I told him to buy me new gas cap. He refused. I told him that I had been getting gas from his station for many years and, if I said that he lost my gas cap, that he lost my gas cap.
He tried to argue but I cut them off. I insisted that he had a responsibility to his customers. I told him that he had to "do the right thing". He paused... And then said, OK.
Where could he go with the argument? The bottom line is, nowhere. You cannot argue with "do the right thing". He replaced it for me, without a problem.
So, you see, "do the right thing" is a powerful phrase.
