In my first novel, Coloured Sands, the pioneering woman Mary saves the life of an aboriginal baby who has been exposed to white man's disease. I used my knowledge of stem tents for treating croup. It is a very serious infection that can can kill a baby very quickly.
To continue with the life experience that held me in good stead while writing my outback sagas.
Like any family we had medicalemergencies. I soon learnt about steamtents for babies with croup and we suffered the real anxiety of flooded creekswhen we had a very sick five year old with internal bleeding. There were no rescue helicopters forty yearsago. We did get our small child to hospital, only because my husband had thevarious one-lane dirt roads of our district imprinted firmly on hissubconscious. We were desperate and had one more road to try and we did finallyget through before that road too wasflooded. My volunteer work these days does support our local rescue helicopterteam with charitable groups like Rotary, Lions, Apex and Quota donatingconstantly to the wonderful organization we call CRISIS with its helicopterpilots and paramedics saving lives at regular intervals.
