Charity Work in Country Towns -the Lions Club 11/14/2011 12:48:56 PM
Life on cattle properties and the social side of Australian country towns – I embraced such knowledge for writing the all Australian novel.
Yesterday gave a glimpse intomy personal involvement on the cattle properties, today we have the other sideof the spectrum that had me dressed in shorts and little skirts playing tennisevery week. I did volunteer work for the P&C and the church guild. We wereinvited to join the Lions Club which was a great avenue to raise money forexceptional needs such as cancer research and that is what the Lions Club inthe township of Blackbutt did in the 1970s. They raised money for leukaemiaresearch by running the local picture theatre. Whole families becameinvolved. The Lions men would preparethe community hall by placing the canvas seats in rows which were usuallystacked against the walls. There was theselling and collecting of tickets and refrigerating the cartons of drinks; alsothe unpacking and setting out the chocolate bars, sweets and chips. These weresold by the women in the canteen area at interval. At the finish, the older children would helptheir fathers in pushing the seats back against the wall and with sweeping thefloor, the children thinking it a fun-thing to push large metre-long broomsaround the hall. All involved absolutely loved the participation and the endresult was so very worthwhile with thousands of dollars being raised for cancerresearch. The retired picture theatre manager trained a couple of Lions membersto operate the projector and there was seldom a problem.
