Now I know I am a good artist Yesterday I went to the Matisse exhibition at GOMA in Brisbane where we are privilaged to have a wonderful collection of drawings by Matisse showing until 3rd March. These drawings show the evolution of his work as he progressed through various stages of his career. What it also showed me was his determination to draw as much as possible on a daily basis.
I have always believed that drawing -anything- was essential to good creative painting be it abstract or realism. Drawing hones the eye and makes you aware of everything around you from the first moment you open your eyes in the moring till lights out at night. Memory drawing comes with practise.
Drawing the human figure from a live model with all its flesh and bones is not to just make a perfect representation of what you are observing but it is the starting point for an exploration of form be it in a landscape or figurative painting.
Matisse has always been a big influence on my work -not just his drawing but also his use of colour and subject matter. having seen his drawings up close with all their clear pure lines and sometimes changes to his drawings I understand my work a lot more.
I am a good artist - not great but good. I will continue to strive to do better work and continue to draw as much as I can -daily if possible. I may never be as good as Matisse but I will strive to achieve some of the beauty of line that I saw yesterday in his drawings.
