A memory of long ago 1/8/2012 12:31:09 AM
This is an incident which happened to me when I was just thirteen years old. It has stuck in my mind, and I thought my fellow writers and readers might enjoy it. I was about thirteen years old and staying on my uncle's farm. During the course of the morning, a black snake had been killed on the property, and left, coiled up in a small tin pail, which was then left sitting on the back verandah. I, being city bred, and never having seen a snake at such close quarters before, examined the corpse closely and in detail, then, tiring of my diversion, left the snake as I had found it, coiled up in the pail.
There came, delicately stepping along the verandah, a very small tabby kitten. Seeing me he stopped right next to the pail, and rubbed himself against it in a very friendly fashiion, eyeing me all the while. For some inexplicable reason, he stretched up and poked his little nose over the rim of the pail. The result was electrifying. He shot backwards with the speed of a miniature express train, every hair on his tiny body standing erect. He must have travelled three or four metres straight backwards in a split second, and it seemed that his feet never touched the ground. Such was the speed and force of his flight, that he actually knocked over two chairs and a small table that had been standing on the verandah.
When I recovered from my hysterical lauhter, I marvelled at the instinct of self preservation which threw the little fellow into such a frenzy of fear -- even though I was sure that he was much too young to ever have seen a snake before.
