What Does God Ask of Us? 7/12/2012 8:56:26 AM
If God gave human beings a soul so that they could live, what motivated Him to do so? The human race hasn’t exactly turned out to be a panacea. Quite the opposite, the world is in a position where its inhabitants can destroy each other with sophisticated military weapons including nuclear bombs. Has God’s plan all along been Armageddon? Was his desire to form a Covenant with man based upon the fact that He knew man had an evil nature from his youth? How did He know this? The truth is that God created the evil within man.
Let’s take a more blind optimistic view. Perhaps God gave man an evil nature, precisely so that man could overcome his evil inclination or at least subdue it. To do this, men and women, let’s not forget the women, would have to be forces of good. This seems simple enough and could this be what God wants of us? Is that it? Doesn’t He want anything else? My own belief is that indeed God is asking us to make a choice to choose good over bad and certainly good over evil. In fact in His Ten Commandments, God was commanding us to make the right moral choices.
The Ten Commandments have turned out to be difficult to follow. In fact no one has followed them exactly because God created the human species with imperfection, so there is no human being on earth that has not sinned at one time or another in his or her life. This doesn’t mean that we should give up trying to follow these Commandments, because we human beings cannot abrogate what God has commanded us to do. God does talk about the first two commandments as what is important to Him; that is, what does He ask of us for Himself. His main premise is that we have no other gods before Him and that we not worship idols in any form. BY doing this one thing, we are praising and honoring God.
In coming Blog Posts, we shall discuss the Ten Commandments and what it means to live a spiritual life. We also will very importantly talk about the benefits of the combination of living a meaningful life and believing in God as opposed to just living a moral life without belief in God.
