When you are in a hurry, Murphy's law always kicks in. A funny thing happened the other day out on the farm. It was a typical winter morning with the exception of a hurried time schedule. Since all hoses are frozen and water needs to be carried out to the alpacas, I thought I had time to take care of this chore before my appointment. It was a good plan. First I would stop at the chicken shelter, feed, water and collect eggs. There were two nice clean eggs to put in my basket. I set the basket on the seat of my cart while I gave them their fresh water. While inside the shelter, our black farm cat, decided he needed to eat an egg or two. He pulled the basket off into the floor of the cart and began eating the broken eggs. I couldn't go any further till he finished otherwise I would have to figure out how to clean raw egg from the cart floor and there was just no time for that. I had only allotted a thirty minute time span to do chores and fifteen minutes had already gone by.
Finally he finished eating and I turned the cart around and drove into the girls pasture. All the females were hungry and it went very quickly so I had only used another seven minutes and then on to the boys pasture.
I exited through the gate and got out of the cart to close the gate and as I turned around, I saw black kitty doing his job with a mouse in his mouth. Good job cat! Just as I said those words, the cat dropped the mouse, the mouse ran under the cart and the cat ran after the mouse. Now I had a decision. Do I climb in the cart and take off and make it on time risking a mouse running up my legs into my lap and running over a cat stalking a mouse he thinks is under the front wheel? My thirty minutes are now up and I still haven't gone into the boys pasture. I took a chance, climbed into the cart and put it in gear. The cat would not move! I had an option, I could take out the key and leave everything sit till after my appointment, but then someone could come along and steal my cart as it would be visible from the road. All of the yelling and poking would not move the cat from his job stalking the mouse.
Finally I got into the cart and put it into reverse, backed it into the fence and the mouse ran for his life. The cat took out after the mouse and I was home free. I could finish quickly and get back to the house and only be a half hour late.
Just as I turned toward the house the cat ran in front of me and decided to play with his mouse for a while. He dropped the mouse onto the path right in front of the cart. I quickly swerved around the pair and parked the cart, carried my empty egg basket into the house and left for my appointment. I was late!! When I arrived, the office was full of patients. It seems the problem was a patient was late for his appointment and threw everyone behind. I kept my mouth shut, sat down and enjoyed the rest as I waited for my turn. Just another day on the farm with Mr. Black Cat.
