This is our review of the Second Chapter of “First Light / The Second Expedition” in the series of “Yah and the Space Cadets.” This blog is published weekly in English and Spanish and is made up of three brief sections: a comment, a summary and an excerpt. In the comment we clarify concepts; for example, in Zorec (main planet and capital of the Empire) the weeks have ten days; a month has three weeks, etc. We welcome your input and sincerely hope you enjoy our blog. First Light – The Second Expedition
Comment: A robone (robot-clone) is a very advanced type of robot that can be identical to a real individual or creature. AquaSoil is the name given to the discovered planet by the cadets. The 3D maps are “living” maps, i.e., they show everything is real time. Nisbar is the Empress of Zorec, wife of Annur and mother of Yah. In addition, she is a gifted mathematician. Kislow is captain of The Whippet, Yah’s personal spacecraft. A zoombel is a unit of speed equivalent to 100,000-light years per hour. Sounds incredibly fast but at that speed it would take about 178 years to cross the known universe. ASADS is the abbreviation of Art of Swift Adjustments to Different Surroundings (a power granted to the cadets).
Summary of Chapter 2 – ASADS and Big Calculations
Following the rescue of Ada by exchanging her for her robone, the cadets make preparations and continue their studies with the intention of preparing AquaSoil for life and a civilization. Among the things they have to decide is whether to hit AquaSoil with a planet or a big moon to deflect it towards a star. The twelve cadets gather at Annur’s loft to use the large 3D maps and to make calculations. They divide the task, one team will determine the speed of the planet; another, the rotational speed of the galaxy; the third team has to detect every possible celestial body on the path and the fourth one has to determine what to use to deflect the planet. Yah, Ada and Sid decide to ask Nisbar’s help and within two minutes, the Empress figures the whole problem out.
Excerpt: “Is that my robone?” asked Ada incredulously while looking at it on a large screen inside the Whippet. “It’s identical to me!”
“It sure is,” agreed Yah. “It is practically impossible to tell the difference between us and our robones,” he concluded.
“But, aren’t they supposed to have three eyes or four ears or something to let others know they are artificial creatures?” asked Ada.
“There are certain dispensations that only the Ancient Kingdom of Annur can take,” interjected Captain Kislow. “Nobody else can do this. To begin with, they don’t have the necessary knowledge and we are not about to show them how it’s done.”
“But, what happens if they discover that it is just a machine?” Ada asked.
“We would be in serious trouble, but there is nothing to worry about. Fifteen days from now, your robone will be picked up by our people and sent in your actual spacecraft to catch up with the Audacious, which will be flying at only one zoombel. You will get to meet your double; she’ll be right in front of you. We will then pack her up and send her directly towards the nearest black hole. That’ll be the end of her,” said Yah.

Esta es nuestra reseña del segundo capítulo de «Luz Primera / La Segunda Expedición» de la serie de «Yah y los Cadetes del Espacio». Este blog se publica semanalmente en inglés y en español y está compuesto de tres secciones breves: un comentario, un resumen y un extracto. En el comentario, aclaramos algunos conceptos; por ejemplo, en Zorec (planeta principal y capital del Imperio) las semanas tienen diez días; un mes tiene tres semanas, etc. Agradecemos sus observaciones y esperamos sinceramente que disfrute de nuestro blog. Luz Primera – La Segunda Expedición
Comentario: Un robón (robot-clon) es un tipo de robot sumamente avanzado que puede ser idéntico a un individuo o criatura real. AcuaTerra es el nombre que los cadetes le dieron al planeta descubierto. Los mapas tridimensionales son mapas «vivientes», es decir, muestran todo en tiempo real. Nisbar es la emperatriz de Zorec, esposa de Annur y madre de Yah. Además, está muy dotada en la ciencia de las matemáticas. Kislow es el capitán de «El Lebrel», la nave espacial personal de Yah. Un zumbel es una unidad de velocidad que equivale a 100,000 años luz por hora. Suena increíblemente rápida pero a esa velocidad tardaríamos unos 178 años en cruzar el universo conocido. AASED es la abreviatura de Arte de Ajustes Súbitos a Entornos Diferentes (un poder otorgado a los cadetes).
Resumen del Capítulo 2 – AASED y Cálculos Enormes
Después de rescatar a Ada intercambiándola por su robón, los cadetes realizan preparativos y continúan sus estudios con el fin de preparar el planeta AcuaTerra para que haya vida y una civilización. Entre las cosas que ellos tienen que decidir está si deben o no golpear a AcuaTerra con un planeta o una luna grande con el fin de desviarlo hacia una estrella. Los doce cadetes se reúnen en el desván de Annur para usar los grandes mapas tridimensionales y para hacer los cálculos. Se dividen la tarea, un equipo determinará la velocidad del planeta; otro, la velocidad rotacional de la galaxia; el tercer equipo tiene que detectar todos los cuerpos celestes posibles que pueda haber en el camino de AcuaTerra y el cuarto tendrá que determinar qué es lo que se debe usar para desviar el planeta. Yah, Ada y Sid deciden pedirle ayuda a Nisbar y en menos de dos minutos, la Emperatriz les resuelve todo el problema.
Extracto: «¿Es ese mi robón?» preguntó Ada con incredulidad mientras lo veía en una gran pantalla en el interior del Lebrel. «¡Es idéntico a mí!»
«Vaya que lo es», comentó en acuerdo Yah. «Es prácticamente imposible notar la diferencia entre nosotros y nuestros robones».
«Pero, ¿no se supone que deben tener tres ojos o cuatro orejas o algo así para dejarles saber a los otros que son criaturas artificiales?» preguntó Ada.
«Hay ciertas prerrogativas que sólo el Antiguo Reino de Annur puede tomarse», interpuso el capitán Kislow. «No hay nadie que sepa cómo se hacen. Empezando por que no tienen el conocimiento necesario para ello y nosotros no se los vamos a proporcionar».
«Pero, ¿qué pasa si descubren que se trata sólo de una máquina?» preguntó Ada.
«Nos meteríamos en un menudo lío, pero no tenemos por qué preocuparnos. Dentro de quince días, nuestro personal recogerá tu robón y lo enviarán piloteando tu propia nave espacial hasta que alcance a la Audaz, la cual estará volando a tan sólo un zumbel. Podrás conocer a tu doble; estará frente a ti. Después la empacaremos y la enviaremos directamente hacia el agujero negro más cercano. Ese será el fin de tu robón», dijo Yah.
