Maintaining a Proper Balance of Teaching, Preaching and the Spirit 8/14/2013 3:03:49 PM
The dimensions of our world depends on the ideas, concepts, experiences, and people we include or exclude. We can depreciate concepts and practices simply because they are outside of the sphere of our familiarity or orthodoxy. And at times, we can avoid dimensions of ministry because of negative encounters with those dimensions of ministry. Abuse of principles and concepts can potentially precipitate a skepticism and disdain for such aspects of ministry. This is true of the propositional and experiential dimensions of the church. Those who put strong emphasis upon preaching and teaching can unintentionally depreciate the ministration of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:1-20) because of negative experiences. Likewise, those who tend to focus upon the gift ministries can avoid the necessity of the need for sound doctrinal content that comes through preaching and teaching. Still, the correction of abuse is not disuse but proper use. Negative encounters nor improper use of Biblical principles and practices should not precipitate a discontinuation of such ministry. Let everything be done in decency and in order. A proper balance should be maintained between teaching, preaching and ministration of the Spirit. We must remember that the early Church was a charismatic community, filled with signs, wonders and miracles.
