Responsibilities of a Mother 8/18/2015 12:21:43 PM
Parenting Tips for Raising Responsible Children
According to the University of North Carolina School of Education, a mother is chiefly responsible for nurturing and rearing her children. A mother has an obligation to help her children develop strong moral principles early in life. The mother’s presence and daily guidance in the life of her children helps them to develop positive character traits with love and compassion for others.
A mother who shirks her responsibilities to her children may encourage them to go on a wayward, destructive path in life. Mothers must also correct children when they do something wrong to teach them how to do better. A mother cannot prevent her children from experiencing every type of pain and hardship, but her kind and compassionate words can soften the blows of life. Modern mothers who are single parents are expected to take on greater roles and responsibilities in the lives of their children, but some have family members to help them out.
Form your own ideas about where the tendency to overdo parenting comes from. While your personal reasoning for overdoing your mom role will be very unique to you, it can be helpful to understand some of the theorizing behind why it is thought that hyper-parenting has arisen in recent years:
Some commentators say that many moms transfer the zeal they applied to a career to their parenting, treating motherhood as another form of profession and social competition.
Sometimes it's a case of needing to define one's own worth by feeling better than the mom next door whose choices are different from yours, rather than accepting that each mom is an individual who is making good choices.
For other moms, it's just about trying to keep up with the Alpha mom model developed by the marketing industry, where educated woman meets super mom in applying corporate-style organizational skills and technological agility to parenting.
And for some moms, it boils down to being afraid of what might happen to their children and to their mothering role, in a society where fear is a constant via media messages.
Whatever the reasons behind super intense parenting, if it's not working for you and you spend a lot of your time feeling stressed, guilty, and unhappy about maintaining this level of socialized competition, then it might be time to call time out for mom and start looking at alternative, less stressful ways to parent.
5 Parenting Tips for Raising Responsible Children
Here are 5 ways you can teach responsibility to your kids:
1. Start young. Young children can help us set the dinner table or put their toys in the toy box.
2. Show children how tasks should be done. Be clear with your expectations. Kids are imitators and they do much better when they are shown how to do something. Let's use those imitation skills to our advantage!
3. Let kids show someone else how a task should be done. Nothing reinforces a skill like teaching it to another person.
4. Be trustworthy and dependable. Children watch us like junior reporters, monitoring our every move. If they see us being responsible, trustworthy, and dependable on a regular basis, they are more likely to conclude being responsible is just a given.
5. Apologize when you make a mistake. Kids already know we make mistakes, so we might as well admit them when we do. If we own up to our mistakes without blaming someone or something else, we show our children there is no shame in being wrong or falling short, especially when we accept responsibility for it.
