A Catharsis? 4/2/2016 12:50:10 PM
Catharsis I've written enough to know that, even when I'm creating characters and story lines that on the surface have no connection to me, I'm still there. Under the words perhaps, but still there.
TIGERLAND, for example, is no autobiographical but the emotions in the story are mine. In a very significant way, I did not know I carried those emotions within me until they appeared in the story. Not fear but terror; not anger but rage..all of that was in my, unrecognized until the story appeared on the page.
This latest novel, ARGO, tells the story of Elmer Spencer, old and sick, traveling across he country in an attempt to reconnect wit his wife who left him more than thirty years earlier.
Here's my point: the loneliness that appears on the page, the loneliness that defines Elmer, is mine. That's a bit sobering. Solitary, yes; I've always been solitary. But here, very close to the end of my own time, I find myself much lonelier than I ever expected.
Sadly, I can't really think of anything to change that...
