Introductory Blog by author Maria Benson - read about her new book, DRIVING ME WILD, and the conversations she is starting with this story. When sizing up potential dates, why do so many women bypass the appropriately polite, thoughtful guy for the aggressive, narcissistic bad boy? Are we just victims of biology, or are we driven toward more edgy or charismatic men by childhood traumas or dysfunctional family relationships?
I know I’m not the only one who has questions about this, because you don’t have to look far to see the topic raised in film, television and on quick hit segments on your local radio morning shows.
Although we joke about it, the topic of how we choose to date – and ultimately, mate – is a serious one. It’s not a laughing matter when you stay up until three a.m. consoling a friend, sister or daughter who’s devastated after learning that her fourth consecutive boyfriend is a cheater. It’s also not so funny when you realize that a dear male friend, brother or son – one who’s sweet, emotionally available and a real catch for the right woman – has decided to shut down and pass himself off as someone cooler, colder and even heartless to seem more attractive. The worst is when these behaviors and relationships lead to physical, sexual or mental abuse.
How can we figure out how to find a partner who is a good fit with our authentic selves? When we find something good, how can we counteract our tendencies toward sabotaging the relationship?
