Cake: A Love Story

First loves are generally fraught with drama and often end in break up. Former lovers move on to new partners, breaking the ties of the past. Occasionally, couples meet again decades later, older and wiser. For a very lucky few, they rekindle a love relationship that blossoms better than before.

Such was the love story of Elizabeth and Harry Lawrence’s romantic memoir, It Had to Be Us, now made into the short film Cake: A Love Story. Filmmaker Misha Zubarev directs the tale of this divorced couple finding their way back together with wit and charm. Richard Vernon and Debra Lord Cooke, as Harry and Elizabeth, are at first wary of each other with so much water under their bridge. But, they indeed decide to tip toe out on that bridge and see if they can meet in the middle.

The film provides nice moments of quiet humor and even a new song, Remember the Day, written by Zubarev.

Proving that romance has no age limit, Cake may just encourage a few people to seek out former loves and see if the spark is still there.
