Personal Journal 3 -- Lathal and Malan 5/15/2020 7:56:41 PM
Whenever I think about how I became a writer 35 years ago, I'm not really sure how that happened. I have a really hard time sometimes explaining my passion and my craft. Maybe not. Maybe people understand when I talk about it.
I just remember being 14 when my junior high friend Ronda Reitman and I started writing create your own adventure stories. One of us would start the story and the other would have to finish it. We came up with names for ourselves and our love interests; that's how Lathal, my character, and Malan, my love interest, were born.
I don't know if Ronda and I had a falling out or if her father got assigned stateside, but I remember starting writing on my own. Some people wonder how I ended up in the romance genre. Ironically at age 14 I wasn't even dating nor did I have a boyfriend. I was reading a lot of Danielle Steele novels at the time. So the idea that the shy quiet girl that I was could have a boyfriend and Danielle Steele's influence prompted me to write in the romance genre. I consider myself a hopeless romantic. I believe a girl will meet a boy who is her soul mate and they will end up in a happily ever after. I had experienced unrequited love in high school and so the premise of my novel series was to have Lathal and Malan fall in love and end up together forever.
Originally my Malan and Lathal novel series was supposed to be a play. It ended up being too long for a play so I decided to turn it into a novel. Later I decided it would be a novel series, and now it's an 8 part novel series. There was a fantasy version of the series too.
The books made several trips to the trash can over the years because I lacked self-esteem and confidence and didn't think they were any good. I had them saved in a series of 5-subject notebooks and I couldn't keep track of them. I wasn't able to start saving my novels on computer until I was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, in the late 1990s.
I didn't finish anything until I was stationed in Germany. That was when I finished my first novella in my Lathal and Malan fantasy series, Romance's Destiny at Marnia. I started publishing books but I am now in the process of revamping my series. In 2014-2015 lost my writing for a few years and i struggled to get it back. I was starting to believe I had lost my writing, and someone ten years ago told me I used to be a great writer. So I honestly thought my craft and passion was gone. It was part of my past.
I finally reclaimed my passion of writing in March 2019 by writing some pieces with my GED class of incarcerated felons who were practicing and honing their writing skills.
I love writing. It's my passion. I feel it's my voice. I was a shy quiet girl and it was a way for me to have a voice. I could freely express myself on the page. I love creating characters and worlds. I can see my characters and what they are doing as if it's a TV show or movie. Other people who have read my work have said they can see that as well. I would love to see my Lathal and Malan novel series as a TV series on CW or HBO someday.
