Why Pacific Sail Pt 2 2/15/2021 12:45:36 PM
I started on a voyage aboard the sailing brig Azalea in my novel Pacific Sail, knowing full well my chances of completion were slim; those of success, “slimmer than an eel’s backbone” as my character, ship’s cook Goodfoot, would have put it. Then characters entered without prompt as did the ships they rode. There were no subplots, only multiple plots. The novel became a tale told on both of America’s coasts. Without anchor, it flowed to the isles of the Caribbean, upriver to New Orleans, across the Atlantic to the shores of Ghana, to the Arctic Ocean and incredibly, to the deserts of Australia. I began to hope for a case of writer’s block.
