Yesterday was Opening Day and it was great to see fans back in the stands. There was plenty of drama with several walk-off victories. In addition to the drama there were a bunch of quirky plays unique to baseball that added to the charm of the day. Miguel Cabrera hit his 350th home run but slid into second because he thought it was double due to the limited visibility caused by a driving snowstorm swirling in the freezing Detroit ballpark. And then there was Cody Bellinger’s nullified home run when fellow teammate Justin Turner passed him on the base paths. Turner thought the ball was caught by the leftfielder so as he hurried back to first base to tag up, he passed the thoroughly perplexed and would- have-been slugger Bellinger who was in this home run trot around the bases.
Baseball is full of such moments and we can look forward to more as the season continues and we enjoy watching, playing and of course reading about our national pastime.
