There had only been four times in Major League history that a perfect game had been broken up by a hit batsman. And then last week it happened twice! Joe Musgrove of the San Diego Padres allowed only one baserunner in his 3-0 victory over the Texas Rangers last Friday. He retired all his 28 batters except Joey Gallo who he unfortunately plunked in the fourth inning. It was however the first no-hitter ever pitched by a Padre.
Later in the week Carlos Rodon of the Chicago White Sox had a perfect game until one out in the ninth when a low-inside breaking ball clipped the toe of Cleveland Indian batter Roberto Perez. Rodon retired the next two batters to complete his no-hitter and gain an 8-0 victory for the Sox. There are many obstacles on the road to perfection none more unusual than a big toe.
