Writing Tip: Here's one approach. 6/1/2021 10:04:40 AM
After thinking out the character's actions, an author must translate thoughts to written words.
If the character is shy, what conveys that to the reader. Yes, the guy can shrink away. However, retreat can have many causes in addition to shyness.
(Note: You could write "Joe is shy." And emboss an "amateur" label to your prose. So, let's not do that.)
If you're having difficulty, flip your approach.
Does a shy person always try to act shy? Of course, not.
He or she, more often than not, tries to hide the shyness.
The character speaks bold words, even if his or her voice quivers during enunciation.
Before going out in public, he/she slides a gray shirt or dress off the closet hanger. The garment is frayed from frequent washings. The character convinces his/her mind today will be different. On goes the bright pattern received from Aunt Rose two Christmas's ago.
This and other actions can show an attempt to overcome a perceived fault, in this scenario, shyness.
If another character is an extrovert, your shy character can emulate the person with the opposite personality. In effect your shy character is attempting to "hide" their shyness. The effort displays what exists.
Shyness is but one example. Think of others: fear, loneliness, anger, etc.
You'll do fine.
