It’s the little things. The Fun of Petty Things ~~ by djl 3/28/19
Well, since the Capitol Hill python is swallowing itself tail to head, and home prices go up the up escalator, we tend to return to the silly, petty things. Here’s mine:
All of a sudden an infinitesimal issue becomes the Kraken. Copasetic couples ferret the backs of their underwear drawers to come up with something about which to riff with their partner.
Her: “Oh, I see! It’s okay for YOU to make a big deal out of nothing, but not me!”
Him: “What are you talking about?”
Her: “The way I smooth the bedding.”
Him: “What about that?”
Her: “I, unlike YOU, don’t have to count the quilt squares to make sure each side has the same number. Who does that?”
Him: “You should.”
Her: “I have much better things to do with my time.”
Him: “Yeah, like spend three hours drawing pictures to post on Instagram so you can get as many likes as humanly possible. I’m just fairly surprised that you can spend 45 minutes getting the lips just right on the imaginary woman in your painting, but can’t bother to make a bed that looks nice and doesn’t give you vertigo each time you pass by.
Her: “It would be very mature of me and quite Zen-like if I just let that go.”
Long awaiting pause from him.
Her: “But I won’t. And I’ll tell you why.”
Him: “Please don’t.”
Her: “Each person holds value in their own way, about people, material objects, ideas, behavior, and how to apply energy and where to give attention in the space of each day in a life. Your comfort zone is precision and uberly-meticulous attention to detail. Order and control. I think that is commendable and remarkable. I brush along certain scrutinies to free space for creativity, which is my most treasured value in my own life, second only people I love. Neither way is wrong, so your quilt squares and my lady’s lipstick hold equal importance.”
He nods.
Her: “Popcorn for dinner okay?”
Him: “I’d really like that.” (He wanted to ask her to use the blue glass bowl instead of the big gray plastic one because of all that wasted bowl space, but he changed his mind.)
