Researching the Ukraine war
8/27/2022 7:56:16 AM

I read REDDIT every day. cat videos, bad drivers, political cartoons and news clips. What's not to like?

But it also has a subreddit - r/ukraine that was crucial to me as I wrote "The King of Siberia". I had no intention of writing about the war itself. I am not competent to do that. And I am certain dozens of great books will be written by Ukrainian writers over the coming years.

But my book makes references to the war, and I wanted them to be accurate. So I read every reddit post on the war. What I found was the major news stories, but also personal and significant insights I was not seeing elsewhere.

I used one in my novel - fork lifts. Apparently the Russians don't use them to move supplies, including ammunition. Another Reddit post showed pictures of the crates tank shells come in. I used that information to add a sequence to my novel - a touch of insight that I think adds some credibility to the actions of a character.

I am amazed - and grateful - for the insights we can gather so easily as we write.
