Most of my novel - The King of Siberia - takes place in the Siberian capital - Novosibirsk. Never been there, but Wikipedia was a great help.
About halfway through my book I wanted to move the action to another Siberian city. So, I started checking through Wikipedia. I got to Tomsk, and there is a mention of THE MUSEUM OF OPPRESSION. My first reaction - the Museum of what?
Turns out Stalin had camps in the region and a secret police headquarters where men were tortured and executed. Now a museum. I did more reading, and then moved a major piece of the novel to that museum. I never would have known anything about it without Wikipedia. I send them a hundred dollars every year, and use them almost every day. What an amazing resource.
And, as I write I learn. The Japanese have a saying about needing a reason to get out of bed in the morning if you wish a long life. To me, writing and learning are pretty good reasons.
