Here Comes Autumn 9/4/2022 3:14:24 PM
Where did the summer go? Time has a way of moving at amazing speeds. With anticipation, we are approaching the third season of the year. I love the fall and the painted landscape. I love the smells and the clear days. To sit and watch a gently falling leaf as it searches for a resting place forming a Godly coven of beauty and peace. They will one day nurture future generations of tree coverings. It is an incredible scene. It causes one to think back to one's youth.
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, fall was the time to finish harvesting. Mom had the canning room in the basement full of filled Ball and Kerr jars. The barn had the hay miles full, and the grain bins were full of oats and wheat. Dad would pick a wagon load of corn before he went to work. I got home from school and had to shovel it into the corn crib. Dad worked afternoons at the steel mill in Canton. After the corn was unloaded, it was time to do the milking. In the fall, the night settled in early. It was a very special time. The night sounds were still announcing to the world, "All was well."
Once the corn was in the crib, then came the meat harvesting. The freezer space we had was for beef and pork. We did not freeze vegetables like now. Dad cured the hams and bacon. They always seemed a bit salty but were still very good.
I remember many fall scenes in calendars, magazines, and books. Beautiful colors include farm settings, villages, and gorgeous landscapes, with dotted homes. Even so, there was a church in the scene most of the time. A gentle reminder to be thankful for the many blessings we receive. There is a loving hand that nurtures and sustains us. I have always felt extra close to the Lord during the fall. I guess that feeling should be year around, but I think the fall is special. If you look at the feasts God commanded Israel to keep, they were in the fall or around harvest season. Each of those feasts would draw them closer to their God. None of this is by coincidence. This is all by design.
We celebrate a special day in November to be thankful, which is good. However, when you see your bins full and the canning room beaming with colorful jars, the freezer is filled to the top. In other words, when we have what we need. We should bow our heads and thank the one who provides for our well-being.
Sometimes we all make poor choices. Even so, there is a recovery system in place waiting patiently for us. Even if we are struggling with something, we must always remember God is faithful. He will never take us anywhere where He is not! Many blessings to all! Thank you, Lord!
