Jack London’s Martin Eden is a delightful literary journey that all writers should take, a novel, to my mind, without a dull chapter. Page after page the writing is strong, confident, and lively, even sublime in several parts. Writers of all disciplines would appreciate the self-educated Eden’s determination to become a successful author despite his blue-collar background. About 500 pages, Martin Eden—a smooth, substantive, enjoyable story—had me thinking about so many aspects of the writing life. Others would likely have a similar response. London was a fine writer and I admire many of his novels and stories.
