Reject: To refuse,to discard as useless. Webster
I can deal with a refusal, but to be discarded as useless without being read is impossible for me to accept. It's not my ego, it's my exterior shell protecting my gut feelings that have never led me off the path to my goals. IF your manuscript is read and declared useless,you are rejected. FINE, go somewhere else or do it yourself.
But when you submit and you get refused because you are just past the 10% of unknown authors they do read, you are not being rejected. You are being overlooked. When they do not read you they can not determine whether or not you should be discarded as useless. They are just overlooking you. It is like being invited to dinner after you have eaten all that you possibly could elsewhere. You politely'refuse'because you are full not because the person cooking is not a good cook. P.A.
