Our schools (Florida) stopped celebrating May Day in 1946 or '47 when Russia was no longer our ally and we refused to acknowledge International Worker's Day ... we'd already set Labor Day at the opposite end of the calendar so our workers would not be linked/aligned with the rest of the world's. I witnessed several peaceful demonstrations around the world. Church groups also objected to the sexual 'pagan' nature of the May Pole. Interestingly, we also used a 'Hitler' salute in the flag pledge during the war. Thanks for the interesting blog.
