Love is the glue that cements the universe. When we strive for perfection it is out of our desire to emulate our God. When we fail or note failure in others to achieve perfection the object lesson is what is most difficult to interpret. In those moments are when we learn that love is the elixir of understanding. Your passion to share the deepest of human emotions is what makes you the musician and pet you are.

I always find your words inspiring...

There is an old saying about people living up to what is expected of them... but in this day and age, I find that many people don't want to have anyone have expectations of them. It is difficult to balance love with that... we all expect things of others, even non-judgmental people who love others, in a close relationship they expect some give and some take. They expect or desire the other person to grant them the same non-judgment and allow love to conquer all.
We live in an imperfect world. Sadly, love doesn't conquer all in this realm. As much as we want it to, it doesn't. I believe this is because even as Christ's love is perfect, it doesn't heal the wounds of others unless they allow that healing love to penetrate. Love is an action verb and while it can be one-sided, it isn't seen in its full realm of glory unless it is reciprocated. It is kind of like the sun shining on pavement. It tends to absorb the sun's rays, but if the sun shines on water or a mirror, it reflects that light and thus magnifies the light being shone.
I have come to believe that there are those situations/relationships that won't and can't be healed in this lifetime because one of the parties won't allow love in. (I speak particularly about RAD, or reactive-attachment-disorder...a very real condition in which the person rejects love and anyone who tries to create more than a surface relationship because they feel it only leads to hurt and thus they protect themselves by denying themselves of the one thing that could heal them.) I hold out hope that in the eternities they will be healed and that they can accept the love that is there for them.

Thanks for your comments.

Welcome back Christine,

You were missed.

I loved your blog. It must have taken much time and thought to write. I think your last few lines impressed me the most. So I will post them here:

"I tend to overlook failings of others and also myself. This is humility, to recognize that one cannot do it all. I just want to live in the spirit of love, believing that the heart can be healed and joyful and thrive with intimate connection to another. Love never fails, never ends, and is the only thing that lives eternal".

"And now these three remain, faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Cor. 13:13)

My Comment: This is one of my favorite Bible verses. Love trumps everything in life even though we cannot see love. One day my teenage daughter came home very drunk and she was cursing at me as she walked in the door. I wanted to tell her to get out of our house and come back after she cleaned up her act. However, silently praying to God, I was the one who turned around. I said, "Listen young lady, I AM you father and I will ALWAYS be your father who will love you even though I do not approve of your behavior. Just know that as my daughter will be loved regardless of your actions and you will always have a place to come home to. Now lets go and get some rest, shall we?" My daughter Barbara Joy just hugged me and stated sobbing in my arms, saying, I love you too daddy"

That made all the difference in the world...

Your last paragraph read:
"And I don't think we should be putting conditions on our love for others. I don't expect perfection in my friends or in myself. Of course, I am hardest on myself, and that is as it should be. But what I am saying is I accept everyone as they are, flaws and all, and especially those I care deeply for. God, I think people are beautiful as they are. Perfection is an illusion, the pursuit of it is a trap, and the enforcement of it (i.e., criticism) harms the soul. I want to build up, to get on with relationship and love people just as they are. Human. We are all in this sky and mud together".

Mu Comments: I truly love this last line. It's so true. I recall as a teen living in a so called "Animal House" with ten guys on Miami Beach while attending college. At times food that I purchased the day before disappeared. I just said something like, "Someone in here must be hungrier than I am. If they are brave enough to come forward I will gladly take them out for a burger. That night I was cooking burgers for everyone and we all had a good laugh about what had happened. Most all of my mates chipped in and contributed to the feast.
When I was visited by some of my college roommates many years later my wife asked if there was one sentence to describe how I treated others during those college years. One friend simply said, "John had no malice!"

My goal during that time was to see some good in everyone I encountered. When I do, I get through some really tough situations and life is really good! When I don't take time to be thoughtful or pray about a situation, it can really ruin the whole day. Yes Christine, we are all HUMAN and LOVE conquers all.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

John Michael

Your oceans are fathoms deeper than mine, as well as your ability to love unconditionally. Through the years I have made many good friends but failed to nurture the friendships. Years pass and contacts fade and I don't try to make friends as like I used to. It's not about fault finding, not about opening up myself to others, not about some high horse view I have of myself either. I often find myself annoyed with people encroaching on my space in markets, and find no joy in crowds. I'm not crowd phobic mind you, just a cranky old guy who like living in the woods. I have no patience for religion, particularly the local holy rollers who I find to be the prejudiced and ignorant intolerant tee-totalers who are all closet drinkers. I guess it comes down to common interests and since I don't have too many the pool for me is fairly small. It's ok though, I don't feel like a wallflower. It sounds like you've found a path with the wisdom to question it. Can't beat that. Your friend, Patrick

I understand where you are coming from Christine, and I have grown to embrace others for who they are and love them just the same. Unconditional love!

You give verses from the Bible. True, there is great wisdom in that book. However, I understood very early on, as that southern Baptist preacher (they weren't ministers yet in my neck of the woods)tried to make me believe that a fish swallowed a man and the man came out of the fish in a few days. That, and other unbelievable things caused me to NOT believe any of it. Saying that, I would like for America to go back to trusting the good things in the Bible, but it seems the Koran is our next "Bible."

As far as your thoughts about those we hold close and dear to us, is a perfect way to go. Though perfect we make mistakes concerning those relationships, my, my, I know I surely do. It is difficult at times to take a person "as is," because of our own imperfections. I would hope everyone could attain your way of looking at people, we would certainly be a much better person.

These are some of the most inspiring and profound words I have read in a long time. Such depth, such feeling, such wisdom and emotion. Only a musician could write these words and they are you.

"We come to life naked and slowly learn to cloth ourselves against life."
