After several years of reading student papers, I agree. Grade inflation and fantasy childhoods create students who have a hard time growing up.

I would probably cry my way through this book, but it's a great tip to browse through.

I had a student write in a paper "asamatafac" and it took me about ten minutes to puzzle out "as a matter of fact. . . "

It's not about standarized testing or any specific program. . . it's about individual teachers with the zeal to teach the basics and insist on the basics at every grade level as well as the desire to love learning. And some of that comes from home as well as peers.

Count the number of times your newscaster says "oh, that's for brainiacs" in explaining the weather, or you find a commercial that extols hating school. . .or cutting work to do some silly thing.
