I think it's because of the novelty still of the system. In the future, many of those students will be the "employers" and, therefore, will be more accepting of online degrees. Distance education/online study, call it whatever, is definitely here to stay. We are simply in the process of adaptation and adjustment, same as usual. I remember my university being called a diploma mill in the 70s. Now, of course, we know it's not so much the institution as the individual student's dedication (remember Bill Gates was a dropout).
