Though the preponderance of future-looking science-fiction literature may indeed be inherently dystopic, there is at least one novel that leaves a light on at the end of the tunnel and that's my all-time favourite sci-fi work, "A Canticle for Leibowitz", by Walter M Miller Jr. published in 1960. This post-apocalyptic tome, which takes place after a devastating nuclear war, has its protagonists taking up the mission of preserving the remnants of man's scientific knowledge until the day the outside world is once again ready for it. It gives a whole new meaning to having to go through hell to get to heaven, but at least in the novel it's a heaven destined to be re-built on earth. I hope this provides at least one "optimistic" option to counter the plethora of doomsday outcomes!
