Barry McGuire sang, "Eve of Destruction." That song fits so well here with your description of the break down of society in so many ways. Even the dead are not immune from it.

We should stay with our feeling of gratitude to those that fell in combat.
That they are there or not we can't let bureaucrats to decide by their own incompetence, but to reaffirm in our hearts the sense of brotherhood with each soldier that's supposed to be there.
And, we can honor them by whispering
Semper Fi to one and every memory of them.
