"Crazy Rich Asians' is being lauded by many Asian-Americans in Hollywood as a rare example of an entirely Chinese/Chinese-American production that (as far as they see it) at long last 'legitimises' non-white actors/producers/directors in the LA film colony. However, the film itself is having an unintended paradoxical effect: that of encouraging conspicuous Chinese consumption and materialistic superfluity. Many Chinese and CAs are already far too obsessed with status display, a tendency that originated (at least the modern equivalent) in America with its capitalistic materialist model. Chinese and CAs need to discard all the showy & ostentatious display of superficial wealth and get back into an appreciation of China's ancient Taoist & Confucian roots. To do otherwise is wasting thousands of years of priceless philosophical heritage. Show me an Asian or CA who drives a high-priced BMW, wears expensive Swiss watches, and dresses to kill and I'll show you a sad parody of all that is admirable and commendable in the world. Show me an Asian or CA who is an artist, eschewing wealth and high-status and I'll show you a VERY worthy individual. The lamentable impact on animal species attributable to ancient Eastern medicine is but a parallel adverse tendency, unfortunately.

Very sad that the crazy rich Chinese are doing this! I thought I would see the movie, but now I won't. We are fighting so hard to preserve species. Sad too that so many cultures hold on to superstitious beliefs that cause pain to animals and to ourselves. |
