Most interesting story, Lucille (but too brief!). So you were in Shanghai, eh? My wife's family also had some experiences like that, except that her family managed to escape from the Imperial Japanese Army and crossed over into Hong Kong (which is where they were when the war ended). Her father was a handsome pilot for the Kuomintang Air Force, who had a couple of 'shiao tai-tai' and left his wife for several years, before rejoining the family later (typical old style 'Loh Gung'). Some of her mother's stories are straight out of Amy Tan's 'Joy Luck Club' (loss of child while escaping, etc.). You should write more about that part of your life.
