Not sure about the back story, Neil, but the first chapter is excellent. I especially like the way you brace the main character for information he expects, finds perfectly 'normal' to hear, yet has so many reservations about. It is quite believable that he has not ever gone through the process before, even though everything was arranged. I found myself in a totally alien situation but accepting it as if I had known about the technology all my life, and was in a near panic about it. Nicely crafted and suspenseful, with yet another suspense and shock just around the corner (next chapter?) ... good luck!
