Boxing Day and we've only just past Easter. Anyway as a UK resident, your first assumption is closest.
Boxing day is always the 26th December. However as a Bank Holiday if it falls at weekend then the Bank Holiday is carried over until Monday (but boxing day still remains on the 26th).
Anyway, the idea is lick a Christmas bonus. The workers would have boxes, hence Boxing Day, on display to accept gifts from their employers or customers. It was viewed as giving something to the poorer working classes.
