You can be commended for having a business that lasted 14 years. Most businesses fail within a year or two, largely because the people going into them have no idea of the expenses, thinking only of gross revenue when they start. I taught in business schools for a time and never went into business for that very reason. The businesses I'm in currently, landlord, lendlord and author are a mixed bag. Landlord is breaking even with a small profit. Lendlord has been highly profitable with a high interest (supposed to be short-term) loan to a highly profitable business for the past 10 years (securing my well-being in retirement) and my home business of being an author resulting in a major loss, offsetting the interest gain from the lending business and lowering taxes.
Although I could have, especially with my twin brother, gone into business several times, I declined because I knew that it would be high pressure 24/7. In higher education, I had guaranteed healthcare and retirement, with enough vacation to travel.
Government regulation is a necessary evil. As far as bailing out business is concerned, I don't agree with it but, political and patriotic pride sometimes gets in the way of good judgment, especially in the case of bailing out major automakers so they can screw up for a few more years.
