Excellent points and very well expressed. Mental illness is not well understood by the public, and it is only fodder for the media, where "schizophrenia" and "manic-depressive" are presented as synonymous with violence and criminality. In fact, schizophrenia and manic-depressive are personality types which seldom develop into criminal behavior. Criminals are criminals, just like killers and abusers are killers and abusers. When caught and faced with court and punishment, "Not guilty by reason of insanity" has become a popular legal gambit, at which point "schizophrenia" and "manic-depressive" and "bi-polar" labels are popped into place to try and secure that desired "not guilty" judgement. It is to the credit of our courts that this gambit seldom works anymore. But, it is to the vast discredit of journalists that they keep showcasing something which was never true.
