"To publish or not to publish - what is the difference?"

I just read your blog "To publish or not to publish" I found it interesting and informative; however, I'm not at all certain that the information is all that accurate. My sweetie and I have "published" 5 books between us and haven't spent anywhere near the kind of money you are talking about.... on all 5 in total. My first book was "published" by a local guy (Fort Pierce, FL) using the name of "Fiction Publishing" and it cost me about $600.00 I wasn't too pleased with his service, but I can buy 1 book or 1000 at a time and they cost me about $6.00 each (also an unsatisfactory price). There is about a 10 to 15 day turnaround time.
For our next projects, we looked around and published them through a company called "Createspace" at a total cost of less than $50.00 each. You are required to purchase the proof copy, but no additional costs are required. We can purchase 1 or 1000 books from them and the price of each book is less than $3.00. That's because we purchased their "Pro Plan" at a cost of $39.00 which saved us about 40% on the cost of individual books. We do our own editing and get very little help from them, but they do provide the ISBN number and the book winds up on a number of online book stores, including Amazon. We show our own name (Diamond Rhodes Publishing) as the publisher on the book cover, but I believe it shows up as having been published by Createspace at the various online sites.
One last comment, Createspace has some very generic covers available for free, but we had our covers designed by Conceptive Book Designs at a cost of only $30.00 each. Conceptive Book Designs must be contacted through Author's Den's marketplace.
So, summing up, we have put out two quality 150 plus page books, including many black & white photos, with an attractive glossy paperback cover and excluding the purchasing of books, our total investment in each case was less than $100.00. We have two smaller books of less than 100 pages each which cost slightly less. We also each have another book nearly ready for the printing or "publishing" process, both of which will be handled by Createspace with covers designed by Conceptive Book Designs.

With internet around i believe if you have to selfpublish the best is to get yourself a domain name and host it with wordpress installed in publish as much as you like and also get visitors and advertising benifits.
