Here is the Story I promised, just remember I was 13 when I wrote this.
THE FLOOD OF 86
On my way home from school I seen everyone in my neighborhood
loading their cars and trucks with their stuff. I had no idea what was going on.
We didn’t have a car and mom and dad weren’t home yet.
I felt like something bad was happening but I didn’t know what . I never
watch TV, so I didn’t think about turning it on.
I was sitting on my windowsill when mom came home.
“Mom, our yard is really holding water.”
“Jody, you know it always does that.”
I sat at my windowsill watching the water get higher and higher. My
windowsill is knee high off the ground. When the water was half way to my
windowsill, I yelled, “MOM, are you sure it’s not flooding?”
“No, Jody, it’s not flooding.”
Mom was losing her patients with me. So I kept quiet. I watched my
whole neighborhood leave. I watched trash, limbs and leaves float by. When
the water got to my windowsill, I put on my black vest. I put my make up in one
pocket and my collection of button pins in the other.
I unhooked my stereo and held it over my head. I wasn’t listening to mom
no more. Early in the week while I had been at school part of our house had
flooded, but this time felt different. I wasn’t scared, but I didn’t know how to
swim.
“Mom, I’m going to the church on the hill, you stay here if you want. I’m
leaving.” I waded waist high water up to the church.
When I got there, there was only a couple of adults and the rest were kids.
So I asked “Where are the grown-ups”. The pastor told me “Their all down
sandbagging the river trying to keep it in.”
I got scared my house was the third one from the river. The pastor gave
me some dry clothes and a blanket.
Sometime during the night the river rushed out of its bed and knocked
down my home. I knew my house was in poor shape and barely standing to
start with, so I knew it was gone forever.
My Uncle Tom showed up. Not my parents, where were they. I didn’t ask
for fear of the answer. He took me to Guthrie and I stayed with him and my aunt
and her 3 children. I had lost everything. Not just my home and belongings, but
my friends, my special getaway, my education and my hope. My life changed.
