Nice post, Robert. I'm a MAD MEN fan myself.
I actually worked in New York advertising, although it was in 1970. I worked for Grey, which has been mentioned a few times on the show (Duck Phillips worked there last season), and I can say that by 1970, the mores had certainly changed. For example, blacks and women were starting to make inroads. The cataclysmic 1960s (which IMHO began on Nov 22, 1963) changed the world as we knew it.
MAD MEN is, to me, about that great change. The fact that it starts in 1960 is a clever idea in that it deceives everyone into believing "Oh, it's the sixties", but in fact it was still the fifties. Last Sunday's show ended with Joan engaging the men to welcome 1965.
Thing is, Don and Roger and the rest of them have no idea of the upheaval that awaits them as the sixties swirl higher and higher around them. They're all stuck in the previous decade. Even Don's Jantzen swimsuit presentation looked dated and he didn't know it.
How they deal with this great cultural earthquake will, I believe, be the crux of the multi-season story arc.
