Vickie...I enjoyed this blog, because I too did what you are doing. My writers group helped me tremendously...especially in early stages of editing; and they were very direct and honest...and like you said...it's important that someone critique honestly, otherwise they have hurt you and not helped you. The only thing I did differently than you is that I took the same few pages/short story for example; and I had it critiqued by 3 of my friends (no one knew who got what story til later)... then... I compared the corrections/changes, etc...and realized that no one had the same thing!! Each found something different; and that was helpful...but in more ways than on..I found that...each reader (critic or not) has their own version of what they "think" it's supposed to sound like.... and sometimes....it's not WHAT YOU MEANT TO REPRESENT IN THE WRITING/TELLING....so.. be careful to remain true to yourself and your writing as well.. There is always a catch 22 in everything...and of course, grammar and things like punctuation etc are always the same...so those fixes are necessary...it's when the words are changed by others that we must be careful to not make hasty decisions... afterall... I am the storyteller... Other than that... you are very correct in your assessment of getting others to help...this process is great, and the price is really good too!
