You're right, Eileen, it is sad to witness the breakdown of human decency in our culture. Chuck Colson (Pres Nixon's "hatchet man,") wrote a book years ago where he lamented the coarsening of America. Sadly, I belive our culture has embraced a philosphy of "It's all about me," that lies at the root of much of the cruelty that abounds. Selfishness, pride, and indifference have taken their toll on us, and it is up to every single one of us to stand up for what is right and reach out to those who are in need.

It is very difficult for so many of us who have a caring and loving spirit...however, like someone here says...one at a time, and we can accomplish much; just takes longer I suppose. We all tend to become reclusive at times in order to protect ourselves from the constant hurt and anger and cruelty that others have for many of us.. They Know Not What They Do!!!!! and..we must not give up... We are only one thread in life; but enough thread can become stronger and thicker and overcome... I know this from my own life, and when it seems that nothing will help, something better comes along to show me that there is a loving God and there is hope, and there is peace if we trust and believe... HOPE is all we have sometimes... so...dear loving friend... don't give up... We must all stick together and good has to overcome! hugs, lindalaw

I feel you, on this one. Our society has definately become cruel and self centered and sometimes it seems impossible to change. I personnally cannot give into this notion, although at times it seems impossible.
Unfortunately, it is one person at a time. I can't help but think of the movie, 'Pay it Forward'. I believe the hardest time to see this, is when it is done to a Senior Citizen. I sometimes cannot stop myself from displaying anger at these times, when I know it should be handled with a Gentle Spirit.

I don't have an answer... but I can nod my head in agreement to each of the other comments that have been made. The saddest part to me is that it is becoming the "norm" to be rude and unkind to one another. I was appalled when one of my children's teachers at middle school told us, with a smile on his face, how he "joked" with our daughter everyday about how much he disliked her and about how terrible she was! My husband and I were speechless...

There is still good in the world though...as evidenced by small and simple things. You can read my blog on AD for an example...

I guess in reality we can choose to be beaten by those who would demean, or we can choose to look for the good and be a part of the good that touches others lives...

I know that your words always touch my life for good.

Hi ET, I was in deep thought about this myself. Why one would be so full of hate towards another, to go out of their way, intentionally, premeditatedly, to hurt someone, even someone they don't know. It baffles me. I was watching a video the other day called The Lucifer Effect. It describes some of the horrible "tests" that Hitler used on people and children, and if the "test" aren't sad enough, those same tests and results had been implemented into our public school system years ago, exactly as Hitler had done, to numb and dumb down society. Thank you for sharing this, ET, it's quite appalling to me and I have, too, come close to becoming a recluse.

This is what happens when God/prayer is taken out of society. All we can do is pray it is brought back into our world; we are doomed if it is not! All I can say is "Come, Lord Jesus, You can't come soon enough"! I don't like it any better than you do!

ET, the answer lies with the dead of compassion after society has been pounded and again with malice's attacks, it became numb.
Like fear, after a while they don't make you afraid anymore, you have got acostumed
to fear and it doesn't hold awake anymore.
Demeaning, coming back from Nam they spat on the uniform, the few first hurt, the many that followed were taken with all the scorn one could muster.
ET, I wouldn't, nor my children and grandchildren go to any battlefield to die for a society that demean us in the end.

Dear Eileen, It is a very good question you are raising here. I believe our society has lost its soul and its feelings for others, for long time. We can only pray that the human beings would be closer to the reality and to the spirit, which in fact is in ourselves. The antenna of our soul is rusty, and it takes a lot of effort to clean it. But it is feasible, if the will is there, along with high guidance. Love Emile

there is no way to make sense of this kind of behavior but it is in fromt of society all the time in these reality shows where youo have to step on a fellow competitor in order to "win"--from chefs to survivor shows to --well the list goes on and on
