I recall that happening to me only once. When I asked her why she was with this other guy, she replied, "I love you both, but I will be with him during the week and you can date me on weekends."

I told her I couldn't live with that arrangement.

Heard later that she was named in his divorce. Since we were all instructors in a small town college, I believe he was dating me to offset the gossip with the other guy she eventually married.

She was very intelligent. But when my grandmother, dying of cancer saw her at my parents' house one weekend, she told my mother, "She's too bossy."

How true, even though those of us expressing with words continually often avoid getting into the weeds with actions. Like a proverb well worth remembering, you've reminded us of a truism often ignored.
