why is our government so pent on employing the same failed policies of the Great Depression? -- all they were successful at was prolonging an event that would have lasted a year until it righted itself -- it is true, "those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat the same mistakes" -- a very good perspective you have shared here Karla -- much love and peace to you my dear friend -- Jon Michael

And they said that things will get worse before they get better...Worse than what?
All those CEO and Bank Directors and Pyramid Consortium Chairmans that gambled with the customers money for that Utopian 1000% short term gains...why they are receiving bailouts when they caused the catastrophe in the first place?
Why we have Sing-Sing for, to put away "third time and you go for life" shoplifters?

In our American K-12 school system, our kids are never pushed toward goals in technology or science or medicine. The No Child Left Behind idiocy has made the kids into good test-takers but it has stifled their learning achievements. At home, parents of the kids provide no push either, mainly treating school as some sort of day-care system. Visits to elementary schools in America are enlightening. Ask a 4th-grade American student, "What will you be when you grow up?" And you might hear "I will be a football star (or policeman)" -- or some other Reality Show goal.

By contrast, visits to elementary schools in India and China are eye-opening. Ask a 4th-grade Chinese or Indian student, "What will you be when you grow up?" And you might be stunned to hear "I will be a nuclear physicist (or biochemist)" or something on that order. High-tech education is the major push on Asian kids, both in school and at home, and this motivates the kids to seek very high goals.

Both China and India have excellent K-12 systems, but both of these countries have way-below-par universities and colleges. This is why their high school graduates are sent to universities and colleges in America to complete their degree studies.

There is something very wrong about this picture, but it does suggest its own solution if we citizens will get our heads out of our butts long enough to re-take our country from the moguls and gets things back on the right track. Do we care enough to do that, or are we just being grumpy?

I hear you. I'm inclined to think that there may be only one criteria for the government policy makers of such inane crap to have, and that is that they posses brains no bigger than that of a gnat; for anything larger would require a spine too. Sorry for the harsh stand here. Just sick of it. J'nia

I don't think it's right for the rich getting richer and the poor getting screwed, especially our veterans. They should NOT lack for anything!!

And to read that the US military allowing immigrants with temporary visas or green cards to join is very disturbing!! What happened????

Is this a way to fast track to benefits denied our own citizens? Another way of outsourcing our jobs? It makes me wonder and shake my head in disgust!

It's like this too in Canada. Whenever the U.S. suffer, the canadians suffer as well. We are just slightly better, or perhaps not even that.

This is a good one, Karla, and it makes us all grumpy. We have a problem and it is a problem of our own making, and we are going to have to solve it. Currently, in America, we have an average eighth-grade reading level, and stats say that this is dropping slowly. Our young people in colleges and universities are choosing degree studies in business and liberal arts, so we are lacking upper division graduates in medicine, science, and technology. Meanwhile, hospitals and scientific laboratories and computer companies are seeing staff vacancies as older staffers retire, and the colleges and universities are not producing replacements. Oops. Students make their own choices and no one is pushing them to pursue degree studies in technology or medicine or science. And that is causing a major problem for America, not only in staffing high-tech vacancies in American corporations, but it is causing America to lose position in international technological domination. Meanwhile (back at the ranch), India and China are producing a surplus of graduates in technology, medicine, and science, and these foreign graduates are processing through our own colleges and universities. End result of all of the above? Vacancies in American corporations are, of necessity, being filled by Chinese and Indian graduates. And foreign graduates from our schools are going back to India and China to create companies which will out-perform our own in the world market. Is this a problem? Yep. Next step -- what is the solution?
