Yes, I have left out the racism, and there is a deep dysfunction in the relationship between cities and the suburbs. I should go after that, and I think I will after thinking about it some. It's just that some of this is a mystery to me because people's attitude are so far away from reality at times.

Most countries such as Japan or Colombia where I live do not have 'white flight'. This phenomenon from the 60s on stemmed from racism and urban crime. 'Decent, law-abiding white people' were afraid of people with darker skin. Especially their crime rates. So in cities like Atlanta, where I lived many years, the whites ran to outlying counties and left the dark people the city centers. The white people commute to work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., roughly. Time after time they ALL practically voted down any attempts to bring mass transit to outlying communities and/or counties. This, actually, should have been challenged in court. Why can NYC have mass transit extending far north of the city? If white flight weren't a racial thing we'd have it here in Colombia or they'd have it in Japan. It's really sad. The big question is why hasn't the nation matured enough after existing so many years in which we all can live in harmony? Also, since the whites weren't "there" (in the inner cities), police protection and or CONCERN diminished in my view since it was the darker people "paying" the price for their own crime rates. Everything you say is valid, indeed, but I think you left out some of what I'm saying here. Good blog. |
