Why should thing be national in the first place? The midwest has more in common with Canada than New York. The southwest has more in common with Mexico. National media is totally artificial anyway.

Yes, it's about competition. The barriers to entry are currently way, way lower for visual stuff of very low quality. Exciting, relevant, and fresh voices just don't have a chance in print. I still think that's part of the issue, but it may be too late for print all the same. I wanna fight it out, tho.

Competition is the key word. It's a deluge of competing entertainment activities. Remember Naisbit (Mindset) says we're moving meteorically toward the "visual culture", not necessarily print culture anymore. |
