Hi Jasmin. Yes, "our value system is in dire disarray" - on all fronts. We do have laws, but laws require complaints to be filed, and we do not have enough citizens who care enough to file those required complaints. On top of that, as you said, we need more laws to cover loopholes. I am a member of Bat World, where exotic bats are rescued from cruel zoo environments. Zoos pay African and South American trappers for these great creatures - to put them on show (for a price, of course), and they are harshly caged where they are injured, damaged, or fall sick. Then they euthanize them, like throwing leftovers into the garbage. I have adopted one bat named Binky, a sub-Saharan Flying Fox. My sister, Wendy, has adopted an Egyptian fruit bat named Cleobatra. Both of these amazing creatures had been rescued from American zoos (both were badly injured) by Bat World Sanctuary here in Texas. But, for every rescued animal, there are a thousand who perish at the hands of uncaring owners. We must do more. |
