Self editing and waiting five years. LOL
I really enjoyed that blog, because it's so true. It happens to me all the time. Well, maybe not five years. Maybe one or two. The truth is we, (if we continue to write and grow) become more sophisticated in our ideas and in our writing stylw. We learn (through osmosis?) what to cut out.
When I write a book, I give it to several friends (educated ones) to read and digest. Then I'll read the book out loud on a tape recorder and make cuts, changes etc. Then, unless i'm under a crunch, I'll leave it for a while before I reread it. (and want to smash it and the ocmputer against the wall.)
The new book (hah) I'm starting on now, actually started in the late 1990's.
It's morphed from a dippy herone with a draculesque theme (castles in romania) to a paranormal romantic suspense. It's still not perfect, but it doesn't have a multitude of characters anymore.
