I wonder if you ascribe to Gabor Mate's theory that much of what we clutch as 'free will' is actually pre-ordained by our genes, but mostly by the 'sea' in which we grow as fetuses. Under stress of butality or hunger, e.g., mothers bathe their womb in adrenilin which the brain and nervous system of the child carries into life, a constant need for situations which causes the adrenal 'rush' - some embrace drugs, others, for this discussion, find comfort in the 'security' of certainty and the stress release of judgementalism, which is often indistinguishable from violence or harsh punishment.
