I have the same dilemma with technology. If I wrote a novel back when beepers were the norm, would it be so outdated now? And if I wrote a novel today where the character checks her Facebook, would it be better to just have her check her device (not go into detail) because years from now Facebook could evolve into something else. It's like watching MeTV and seeing folks picking up those clumsy things called "telephones." In historical fiction you have to keep with the times. But are we always doomed to write in the past????

Hi, Eva. The Elephant in the room in both "Becoming" and "For Better or Worse" was cigarettes'. Everyone smoked in the periods the two books run from 1939 through 1963 . What to do... Screw it! I left cigarettes' out all together. We are writing fiction. In my case, 'kind of fiction' and If I do not want people to smoke, screw it! They did not light up.
