I think it's natural to have a tendency to extend a thought. One of the best assets of a successful (and knowledgable) writer is an understanding of how to flesh-out a story so that it is both spare and lean (eliminating unnecessary 'fat' from the narrative), having a well-delineated 'flow' that gets the story told with maximal effectiveness and efficiency. As a 'not-so-skilled' story-teller myself, I frequently find that I still have difficulties with this critical element of style.
